We were approached by a large manufacturer wanting to determine if its freight rates and charges were competitive. To accomplish this, we conducted a freight cost benchmarking process, a step that involved comparing the client’s freight rates to the actual rates of other companies that made similar shipments. Our findings were that the client had the potential to significantly reduce freight costs by using other carriers and other shipment modes that would still provide the kinds of service quality required, with a projected savings in excess of 20%. We subsequently worked with the client to conduct rate negotiations which produced lower freight rates and substantial savings.
